The Spartan team also received recognition with the NWCA Division III Scholar Team Award after finishing the season ranked 34th in the country with a team grade-point average of 3.08.
This is the third-straight season under third-year head coach Duane Bastress that the Spartans have been honored as a team for their academic success. Flynn and Shorter become the 33rd and 34th Scholar All-Americans in program history. The total number of selections grows to five under the of Bastress.
Flynn is now a three-time Scholar All-American. The mechanical engineering major boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.54. On the mat this season, Flynn captured his second-straight NCAA Mideast Regional Championship at 133 pounds and earned an NCAA Division III Championships berth for the second time in his career. The junior compiled a record of 30-9 for the season, good for his second-consecutive 30-win season. For his career, Flynn has 91 wins and sits tied for fifth on the program's all-time wins list. The junior needs just 24 wins to become the all-time leader.
Shorter earned his first selection as a Scholar All-American. The sophomore criminal justice major has a cumulative GPA of 3.24. On the mat this season, Shorter placed sixth at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships for the second-straight season at 197. The sophomore compiled a record of 23-15 and finished second on the team with 10 pins. For his career, Shorter has accumulated 57 wins and recorded double-digit pins for the second-straight season. The sophomore needs 23 wins to break into the top 10 on the program's all-time wins list.
As a team this season, the Spartans finished ranked No. 21 in the final NWCA team rankings. They compiled a dual-meet record of 15-8, placed sixth out of 18 teams at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships and finished tied for 20th out of 53 teams at the NCAA D-III Wrestling Championships. York had four wrestlers place at the Mideast Regional Championships, sent three wrestlers to the 2016 NCAA D-III Wrestling Championships and produced one NCAA All-American.
To qualify as an NWCA Scholar All-American, a wrestler must be in at least his second semester at a school. His GPA must be at least 3.2 and he must meet at least one of the following wrestling criteria: 1. 2016 NCAA qualifier with a record above .500; 2. Regional top-six finisher with a greater-than-.500 record and competed in 50 percent or greater of a team's schedule; 3. Record above 67 percent and competed in 50 percent or greater of a team's schedule.
The team GPA is calculated as an average of the top 10 students on each team. At least six of the 10 athletes chosen must have competed in the NCAA qualifying tournament, and the other athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's scheduled contests.
