Jurkiewicz named CAC Pitcher of the Week

York College softball pitcher Melissa Jurkiewicz was named the Capital Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.

York College junior pitcher Melissa Jurkiewicz pitched 11 combined innings on Tuesday to help the Spartans to a perfect 3-0 day in Florida.

The sophomore kicked off her 2016 season by posting back-to-back stellar starts, helping the Spartans get off to a 3-1 start to their season through Monday's games.

In her two outings, Jurkiewicz tossed two complete games, allowing just one earned run in her outings. In both games, she also struck out 10 hitters, setting a new career-high for strikeouts in a game. Her first start of the year, a 6-0 victory against Lyndon State on Sunday, she tossed a one-hit shutout.

Softball splits doubleheader: York improved to 4-2 on the year after splitting its two games on Tuesday in Clermont, Florida.

In the second game of the day, the Spartans needed just five innings to defeat Finlandia, 12-1, bouncing back from a loss earlier in the day.

After falling behind 1-0 after the top of the first, York's offense immediately responded, scoring seven runs in the bottom half of the inning and then five more in the bottom of the second. Of the 12 runs that the Spartans scored in the game, only nine were earned. Haley Hirn and Ashley Werner each recorded two-RBI games, while, as a team, York needed just four hits in the game to score its 12 runs. The Spartans were aided by wild pitching from the Finlandia staff, which walked five batters and hit three more.

The blowout victory was a nice bounce-back win for York after it dropped a 1-0 walk-off decision to Rose-Hulman earlier in the day. After playing the first six and a half innings scoreless, Rose-Hulman finally cracked Jurkiewicz in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Jessica Will provided the only offense, singling home Janel Lake, giving Rose-Hulman its first win of the year.

The loss for the Spartans snapped their three-game winning streak and was the first defeat Jurkiewicz has suffered this season. Still, she pitched a strong game, allowing the lone run in 6 2/3 innings, surrendering seven hits, two walks and striking out three. The York offense managed just four hits in the contest.

The Spartans will have off on Wednesday before continuing their week-long trip in Florida with a doubleheader on Thursday against Wartburg College and Hanover College. The game against Wartburg is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the Hanover game scheduled for 11 a.m.

Baseball drops another one: The York College baseball team dropped its third straight game on Tuesday, losing to Catholic University, 8-2, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The loss was not only the third straight for the Spartans, but also dropped the team to just 1-5 on the year as it continues its southern swing of season-opening games. York has just two more games in Myrtle Beach before heading back north. Wednesday's game against Methodist is scheduled for 4 p.m.
