York College wrestling team goes 2-2
ALLIANCE, OHIO – The York College wrestling team competed at the highly competitive 2015 Mount Union Duals in Alliance, Ohio on Saturday. The 16th ranked Spartans dropped decisions to #15 Mount Union and #14 Baldwin Wallace and picked up wins over #28 Heidelberg and Washington & Jefferson.
York is now 4-5 on the dual meet season.
The Green and White started off the day with a match up against the host Purple Raiders. Mount Union earned the win in the 125 pound to take the early lead. Ryan Flynn (Eagleville, Pa./Marple Newtown) tied the match at three with a 2-1 win over Alec Cotton in the 133-pound bout. The Raiders took control of the match with three straight wins at 141, 149, and 157. Over that span, Mount Union got a tech fall win at 141, a 4-1 win at 149, and a win by fall at 157. Those wins pushed the Purple Raider lead to 17-3. Frankie Krauss (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) got York back on track with a 7-6 win at 165 pounds. Teammate Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) followed wit h a 7-5 win at 174 pounds as York cut the Mount Union lead to 17-6. The Purple Raiders earned a 6-1 win at 184 to push their advantage to 20-9. York got their final win of the match as sophomore John Shorter (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) earned a 6-4 win at 197. The Raiders closed out the match with a 6-5 win at heavyweight as they downed the Spartans 23-12.
York bounced back in a big way against Heidelberg as the Spartans put together a very strong 38-9 victory. The Green and White ripped off wins in the opening three weight classes. Sophomore Lake Laughman (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) began the match with a pin fall win over Derek Thomas in the 125-pound match. Laughman earned his pin in 4:07. Flynn improved to 2-0 on the day with a 21-5 tech fall victory at 133. Greg Warner (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) pushed the York lead to 16-0 with a 15-0 tech fall over Joey Baitt. The Student Princes got on the board with a decision at 149 pounds but York came right back with a Cory Rank (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) 6-1 win at 157 as the York lead grew to 19-3. Krauss earned his second win of the day with an 18-7 major decision at 165 pounds. Heidelberg got a win by fall at 174 pounds but York closed the match with wins in the final three weight classes. Jesse Huber (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) posted a win by fall victory in the 184-pound bout. Shorter picked up his second win with a 3-1 decision at 197. Senior Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) returned to the lineup after a leg injury he suffered earlier this year. Spencer notched a pin fall win over Napoleon Bell in the heavyweight match.
The Spartans' third match pitted the Green and White against their third straight nationally ranked squad. The #14 Yellow Jackets had the better of the wrestling in the match as they downed York 33-9. Baldwin Wallace began the match with a 15-11 win at 125 pounds. Then, in one of the best matches of the day, the Yellow Jackets' fourth ranked 133 pounder Jesse Gunter faced off against Flynn, the ninth ranked wrestler in the weight class. Gunter edged Flynn 3-2 as the Yellow Jackets had a 6-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets would win the next six weight classes to push out to a 33-0 lead. Shorter notched his third win of the day with a win by fall over Gabriel Mahaney in the 197-pound bout. Senior Cody Mason (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore), the eighth ranked heavyweight in the nation, earned his first win of the day with a 4-2 decision to provide for the Yellow Jackets' final margin of vict ory.
York closed out the day with a 33-16 win over Washington & Jefferson. Laughman earned his second win of the day with a pin fall win over Dominic Percell in the 125-pound match. Flynn earned a win by forfeit as the York lead grew to 12-0. The Presidents got a win at 141 but Mikal Jenkins (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) got York going again with an exciting 2-0 win over Josh Armstrong in the 149-pound bout. Sophomore David Keith (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) registered a win by fall in 2:04 in the 157-pound bout as the York lead grew to 21-3. The Presidents got those six points back with a pin fall win in the 165-pound bout. The Spartans won two of the final four matches to provide for the final 33-16 win.
The Spartans are now off until December 5 when they host the New Standard Corporation Invitational at the M&T Bank Field House.
