York College women's lacrosse team earns another NCAA Division III bid
The York College women's lacrosse team earned its fourth consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament bid when the field was announced Sunday evening.
York will play host to Union College on Sunday, May 10, at 1 p.m. at Kinsley Field in a second-round contest.
The Spartans earned the at-large berth after falling to No. 8 Salisbury in the Capital Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday, 6-3. The Spartans enter the tournament at 13-5, with all five losses coming to teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game.
Union advanced to the NCAA Tournament courtesy of the automatic bid after winning the Liberty League. The Dutchwomen defeated Skidmore 14-6 in the conference championship game on Saturday. Union is red hot, having won seven straight. They are 13-3 overall.
The game will be York's third NCAA Tournament home game. They defeated Washington & Lee 13-6 in 2013 and St. John Fisher 13-12 in a thrilling win last year in the second round.
The Dutchwomen have played three NCAA tournament qualifiers in 2015 and they dropped all three games, losing to Cortland, Catholic and Middlebury. Union went a perfect 9-0 in Liberty League regular-season play.
Spartan head coach Jen Muston is happy to see her team earn the at-large berth.
"Today is another great day for our program," Muston said. "We feel fortunate and very excited about getting our fourth straight bid to the NCAA Tournament. We have worked very hard this season. We feel that the way we have been playing in the second half of the season that we have a lot of great lacrosse left in us. We are excited to have the chance to keep playing and this is the opportunity we have wanted from the beginning. The opportunity to keep pushing the envelope further each season and to continue to work toward the postseason goals the team established in the fall. It will be a great week of practice as we prepare for a strong opponent on Sunday."
