YORK COLLEGE: Spartans move into CAC men's lacrosse semifinals

The fourth-seeded York College men's lacrosse advanced to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday with an 8-6 win over fifth-seeded St. Mary's in the quarterfinal round at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans (10-8) grabbed control of the contest with a 5-0 run that spanned from the end of the second quarter all the way into the beginning of the fourth quarter. The run helped York erase a 3-2 deficit and take a 7-3 lead with just more than 13 minutes to play. Despite giving up three of the last four goals in the game, the Spartans held on for the slim victory and will now face top-seeded Salisbury in the semifinals on Saturday. Salisbury is ranked No. 8 in the nation in NCAA Division III.

Tyler Hutson led the attack for York, scoring a game-high four goals and adding in an assist. Andrew Gamble scored twice for the Spartans, both coming in the third quarter, which was the only offense in the frame for either team. His goals helped extend York's lead from 4-3 to 6-3.

In goal, Caleb Abney earned the win, stopping two of seven shots faced. James Anderson relieved Abney with just under two minutes left in the game, coming up with two saves on three shots.

York rallies past Rowan in baseball: The York College baseball team scored eight runs over its final two at-bats en route to a 12-9 triumph over visiting Rowan on Wednesday.

York (13-16) entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 5-4, but three runs put it ahead of Rowan (22-9), 7-5. But, the lead was short-lived, as the Profs hung a four-spot in the top of the eighth, only to see the Spartans come right back with five runs of their own. A clean top of the ninth for Zach Philippi helped York close out the contest.

The middle of the Spartans' lineup came up huge, with Sean Mohollen, Derek Pitzer and Christian Bilan combining to go 7-for-12 with nine of the team's RBIs.

Dan Gurganus earned the win, throwing three innings in relief of starter Randy Frankenfield.

Spartans sweep softball doubleheader over Elizabethtown: York won both softball contests over the Elizabethtown Blue Jays on Wednesday, taking Game 1, 3-2, and Game 2, 9-7.

A three-run seventh inning helped York open up a 9-5 lead in the second game. Vanessa Mendez, Megan Martin and Miranda Shandy each had two RBIs in the game for the Spartans (21-15). Courtney Martin earned the win, pitching four innings in relief of starter Melissa Jurkiewicz.

In the first game, a fast start by York helped it to the one-run victory. The team scored three times within the first three innings and then, after giving up two runs in the bottom of the fourth, held Elizabethtown (13-18) scoreless the rest of the way. Ashley Werner's two-run single in the top of the second opened the scoring and was the big knock in the contest. Martin pitched a complete game, giving up the two runs on seven hits.
