Penn State kicker Joey Julius, who went public last year about facing depression and an eating disorder, will not return to the team this fall.

A Penn State spokesperson confirmed Monday that Julius, a senior from Hummelstown, no longer is on the roster. first reported the story.

Julius, who did not participate in spring drills, announced in May that he had re-entered treatment for an eating disorder. Julius returned to the St. Louis facility that he first admitted himself into in 2016.

Julius went public about his treatment last fall, appearing on “Good Morning America” to discuss the stigma of athletes facing such issues. He spoke about his eating disorder prior to the Rose Bowl last year.

"I still have struggles, I still have the depression side of it, still have all the anxieties," Julius said at Rose Bowl media day. "But I also have people who recognize that I'm struggling and can help. It's just easier, because I'm not hiding anything. I'm not holding it in."

Julius, a walk-on who played two seasons at Penn State, primarily handled kickoffs last season. He also drew national attention for his big hits, notably one against Michigan returner Jourdan Lewis.
