Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson to take part in York County clay shoot
Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson will take part in Penn State York's seventh annual clay shoot on Thursday, April 23, beginning at noon.
Sanderson will be a celebrity shooter and participants will have the opportunity to "beat the coach." Following the afternoon of shooting, Sanderson will also share a few words at a tailgate event.
The clay shoot takes place at Central Penn Sporting Clays (CPSC) in Wellsville. The event is from noon until 4 p.m. and benefits Penn State York's athletic programs. Funds raised will help provide new equipment, help pay for preseason training programs and additional travel expenses for postseason play. Penn State York offers five intercollegiate sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, soccer and women's volleyball, and a variety of club or intramural sports.
The schedule for the day includes clinics for novice shooters at 11:30 a.m., registration, flurry, archery and lunch beginning at noon, warm-up from noon until 1 p.m., a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and a tailgate along with awards and prizes at 3:30 p.m. The novice clinic is with Andrea Seefeldt Knight, an experienced shooter and the 2013 Maryland State Champion in the Lady and A Class divisions.
Sanderson has just completed his sixth season as head coach of the Nittany Lion wrestling team. The veteran head coach already has four NCAA and four Big Ten titles in hand at PSU. He has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year four times and was named the 2013 National Coach of the Year (his second such honor).
During his tenure, PSU has produced 31 All-Americans, eight national champions and two NCAA Tournament Outstanding Wrestlers. Sanderson, who previously coached at Iowa State, owns an overall 126-24-2 dual meet mark in this, his ninth year as a head coach. He is 82-14-2 at Penn State.
Individuals can be a shooter for $95, which includes 50 clays, or $135, for 100 clays. Foam ear plugs, lunch and tailgate, contest participation (including flurry, archery) and additional contests on the course are also included in the price. Participants receive an event gift and team photo as well.
Sponsorships are still available for businesses.
