Penn State York makes serious statement over weekend

The Penn State York men's basketball team made an emphatic statement over the weekend.

The local Lions piled up a staggering 218 points over two home games to solidify their hold on first place in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.

Friday, PSY rolled to a 116-84 triumph over Penn State Beaver.

Saturday, the Yorkers surprisingly dominated second-place Penn State Greater Allegheny in a battle for first place in the PSUAC, 102-65.

PSY (14-5 overall) now sits at 12-0 in the conference and holds a two-game lead over Greater Allegheny, which fell to 16-5 overall and 10-2 in the PSUAC.

PSY is now averaging more than 92 points per game.

Dover High School graduate Ryan Beck paced the local Lions, averaging 22.5 points over the two games. Red Lion grad Trent Thomas averaged 20 points and 8.5 rebounds in the two contests. Susquehannock grad Richard Grant added 10 points and nine rebounds in the two games, while Lucas Jewell chipped in 9.5 points and eight assists per game. Joey O'Dwyer averaged 12.5 points over the weekend.

PSY has four PSUAC games left in the regular season. The Yorkers' next game is 8 p.m. Wednesday at home vs. Christendom in a non-league contest.

PSY women get first PSUAC win: While the PSY men have been rolling this season, the PSY women have struggled.

Saturday night, however, the York women broke through for their first PSUAC win of the season, 71-51 over Greater Allegheny. That followed a 69-64 loss to Penn State Beaver on Friday.

The PSY women improved to 6-10 overall and 1-9 in the PSUAC.

Emily Colon led PSY in the two games with 41 points and 17 rebounds, while Karra Thomason added 24 points and 25 rebounds.

York sweeps to pair of wins: The York College basketball teams also produced a winning weekend, sweeping to a pair of road wins over Southern Virginia on Saturday.

The York women cruised 84-61 to improve to 14-5 overall and 8-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Spartans have won six of seven.

Morgan Golec (17 points, five rebounds, four steals, two assists, two blocks), Susquehannock grad Katie Wagner (16 points, four rebounds, four steals, two assists) and Beth Wiseley (16 points, four steals, three rebounds, three assists, two blocks) paced York.

The Spartans also won the men's game, but had to rally from a 14-point second-half deficit to improve to 12-7 overall 7-5 in the CAC. The win snapped York's two-game losing skid.

Blayde Reich (14 points, seven rebounds), Central York grad Jared Wagner (11 points, six rebounds, four steals, two assists), Jason Bady (11 points, seven rebounds, three steals) and Matt Scamuffo (10 points, three rebounds) led York.
