COLLEGE: York women's tennis team starts strong, thanks to some local standouts
The York College women's tennis team got its 2015 campaign off to a solid start with a 9-0 victory against visiting Goucher on Wednesday.
A number of former York-Adams League players had a part in the victory.
The Spartans' third doubles combo of Mckenzie Krout, a Red Lion grad, and Megan Jones, also a former Lion, pushed the Spartan lead to 2-0 with an 8-3 victory.
The Spartans' No. 1 doubles team of Katie Wagner, a Susquehannock grad, and Darian Naill posted an 8-3 win to complete the doubles sweep.
Wagner also won her singles match, 6-0, 6-4. Krout was also victorious in singles, winning her match 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Elizabeth Wiley, a Northeastern product, completed the shutout for York with a three-set win, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-4.
Penn State York 4, Penn State Schuylkill 0: York raced out to a 3-0 lead at halftime before cruising to the road victory. Victor Rodriguez, Steve Miller and Fakhry Jelani were the first-half scorers for the local Lions. Casey Tober scored in the second half. The PSY defense limited the hosts to two shots on goal. PSY is 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.
York 1, Johns Hopkins 0: At Johns Hopkins, Andrew Park's goal was the difference as the Spartans suffered a tough road loss. Charlie Johnson stopped 11 shots in goal for York (2-3-1). Johns Hopkins is 4-2-1.
Gettysburg 1, York 0: At York, the first career goal from sophomore Jessica Cuttone was the difference for the Bullets. Gettysburg moved to 3-0-2 and has yet to allow a goal on the season. Kate Lutte made seven saves in goal for York (1-4).
Penn State Brandywine 3, Penn State York 0: At Media, Brandywine posted a 25-7, 25-15, 25-16 victory thanks in part to a match-high six kills from Molly Nichols. Sabrina Simmons, Hanna Shull and Brittany Aquino each recorded three kills for PSY, which is now 0-2 in the PSUAC.
