LOCAL COLLEGE NOTES: York softball team ousted from CAC playoffs
The York College softball team was eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday after falling to Salisbury, 7-2, in its second game of the day.
It was the second loss of the day for the Spartans (19-15), suffering an earlier defeat to Mary Washington, 6-4. York went 0-2 as the No. 5 seed in the double-elimination tournament being played in Newport News, Virginia.
Carleigh Ruleman recorded the only RBI of the Salisbury contest for the Spartans, a two-out double in the top of the sixth, scoring Savannah Zittle. Courtney Martin pitched the final five innings for York, relieving Melissa Jurkiewicz, who gave up six runs, but only two earned, in one-plus inning of work. The Sea Gulls entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
In the first game, a four-run bottom of the sixth by the fourth-seeded Eagles cost the Spartans. York entered the sixth up 3-2, before tacking on a run on a Vanessa Mendez single that scored Ruleman. But a Hannah Williams' three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth erased the Spartans' lead and proved to be the game-winning blow. Martin tossed a complete game for the Spartans, giving up six runs, four earned, on five hits. Emily Glatts had the most productive game at the plate for York, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
While the Spartans' postseason run is over, they still have eight games remaining, four non-league doubleheaders.
