COLLEGE: York men's lacrosse team earns CAC championship berth, will face Salisbury
The York College men's lacrosse team will play for the Capital Athletic Conference title on Saturday.
The top-seeded Spartans punched their ticket to the championship by routing visiting Frostburg State on Tuesday, 16-8.
York, ranked No. 2 nationally in NCAA Division III, will play host to second-seeded Salisbury in Saturday's final. Salisbury is ranked No. 7 nationally in D-III. York beat Salisbury in their only meeting this season, 15-6, in York.
The Spartans improved to 17-1 overall. Frostburg State fell to 10-10. Salisbury is 15-3 after a 14-3 semifinal win over No. 16 Christopher Newport.
York dropped last year's CAC title game to Salisbury, 15-5.
The Spartans' leaders Tuesday were Thomas Pfeiffer (two goals, four assists), Jake Hvazda (two goals, two assists) and Hunter Davis (two goals, assist).
Baseball team earns wild win: The York College baseball team held on for a 15-13 nonleague win over visiting Susquehanna on Wednesday to improve to 19-16-1. Susquehanna fell to 16-21. York was led by Rob Acierno (two hits, homer, three RBIs, run), Zach Hossler (two hits, double, three RBIs, run), Seth Brosius (two hits, homer, three runs, two RBIs), Jack Barry (two hits, two RBIs, run), York Catholic grad Patrick Clement (two hits, double, RBI, run), Kennard-Dale grad Collin Crowell (two hits, two runs), Garrett Southern (two hits, homer, two runs, RBI) and Christian Bilan (two hits, homer, two runs, RBI). The Spartans are averaging more than nine runs per game.
Softball team splits doubleheader: The York College softball team split a doubleheader vs. visiting Stevenson on Tuesday, winning the opener, 1-0, and dropping the second game, 3-2. York is 27-16-1 overall, while Stevenson is 17-17. In the opener, York's Ginger Lewis (14-7) pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out six. In the second game, Samantha Kiser (3-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief and didn't allow an earned run, but still took the loss.
Smith honored by CAC: York College senior Alex Smith was named the Capital Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week after posting a school-record time of 8 minutes, 36.66 seconds en route to winning the 3,000-meter race at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University.
Women's tennis team falls: The York College women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to Mary Washington on Wednesday in the CAC semifinals. York finishes at 11-6.
