COLLEGE HOOPS: York women roll to win vs. St. Mary's

The York College women's basketball team continued its impressive season on Wednesday night, this time easily dispatching St. Mary's, 66-42.

The Spartans (15-5 overall, 9-4 Capital Athletic Conference) led the Seahawks (6-14, 4-9) by nine at halftime and then continued to extend the lead before putting the game away with a 21-8 fourth quarter.

Red Lion High School graduate Morgan Kuehne scored a team-high 18 points to lead York, while Morgan Golec added 11. They were the only two players to reach double figures for the Spartans, although 11 York players scored in the contest. York did hold a 20-4 advantage in points off of turnovers and forced 23 St. Mary's turnovers.

The Spartans have now won three games in a row and 10 of their last 12.

York will be in action again on Saturday when it begins a three-game stretch of road games, starting with Salisbury at 2 p.m.


Spartan men go wire-to-wire over St. Mary's: The York College men's basketball team led from start to finish to down St. Mary's, 81-66, at home.

The Spartans (13-7, 8-5) opened the contest on a 9-0 run and rolled from there, eventually opening a lead by more than 20 points in the second half.

Blayde Reich led York in scoring with 14 points and added eight rebounds, followed by 13 points from Matt Scamuffo. Central York grad Jared Wagner and Spring Grove grad Darin Gordon, both freshman, each had eight points in starting roles. The Seahwaks (10-10, 5-8) got a game-high 18 points from Ochae Bynum.

The Spartans held a distinct advantage in bench points, outscoring St. Mary's bench, 38-18.

The Spartans will travel to Salisbury on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip.

PSY men blow out Christendom: The Penn State York men's team led by 50 at the break and blew out Christendom, 91-31.

The local Lions (15-5, 12-0 PSUAC) scored 60 points in the first half, while allowing just 10 points to establish their dominance in the contest. Red Lion grad Trent Thomas led PSY with 15 points and 10 rebounds and was one of 13 PSY players to score in the contest. Justin Luton was right behind Thomas with 14 points, while Richard Grant added 11 points and eight boards.

The local Lions held Christendom to 19 percent shooting, while shooting 56 percent on their own.

PSY will be back in action Friday night when it travels to face PSU Worthington-Scranton at 8 p.m.

PSY women's rally falls short: The PSY women's basketball team mounted a furious second-half rally, but fell to Christendom, 58-55, at home.

The local Lions (6-11, 1-9 PSUAC) trailed by 14 after two quarters, but outscored Christendom by three in the third and then eight in the fourth to make it a game, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Emily Colon led PSY with 16 points, while Karra Thomason added 12 and Charizma Johnson chipped in 11.

The local Lions are scheduled to be back in action Friday night when they travel to face PSU Worthington-Scranton at 6 p.m.
