COLLEGE: York's Whitcomb is Spartan Athlete of Week

York College freshman middle hitter Madyson Whitcomb has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week.
The Bermudian Springs High School graduate led the York women's volleyball team to a 3-0 week.
York has now won nine straight and is 12-1 for the season.
In the Spartans' come-from-behind 3-2 win over Gettysburg in York's home opener on Wednesday, Whitcomb tallied 13 kills and a .324 attack percentage. She also had two digs and five blocks, including two solo blocks, for 17.5 points for the night.
She followed that with seven kills and a .400 attack percentage in the 3-1 win over Hood on Saturday. She also had four blocks and a dig in the win. Whitcomb ended the week by playing sparingly in two sets in the Spartans' lopsided win over Rosemont.
For the week, Whitcomb had 22 kills and a .365 attack percentage, three service aces, three digs and 10 blocks. She totaled 31.5 points, good for 2.9 points per set.
Suburban grad recognized by PSAC: York Suburban High School graduate Maura Brehl has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week.
Brehl is a 5-foot, 8-inch sophomore outside hitter for Pitt-Johnstown. She hit .318 for the week, totaling 32 kills, 17 digs and seven blocks as Pitt-Johnstown reeled off three straight wins. In a pair of four-set wins, she posted 13 kills, nine digs and four blocks vs. Alderson-Broaddus and had 12 kills and seven digs vs. Charleston. Brehl also hit .417 with seven kills and three blocks in a straight-set triumph over Ohio Valley.
York College men's soccer falls late to Messiah: The York College men's soccer team lost a close match against perennial power Messiah on Tuesday, dropping a 3-2 away result.
York (3-4-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime and then equalized early in the second half on a Nathan Bilbie goal. But, back-to-back goals by Messiah (5-0-2) in the 64th and 83rd minute seemed to put the match out of reach for the Spartans. However, Matt Freibaum scored just 36 seconds after the third Falcons' goal in the 84th minute to bring York to within 3-2 and make the final moments interesting.
Penn State York men's soccer concedes late to lose: The Penn State York men's soccer team allowed two second-half goals to drop a 2-1 result to PSU Mont Alto on Tuesday.
After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, PSU York allowed two goals to Mont Alto's Nahili Hunde in the second half, the equalizer coming in the 63rd minute and then the winner in the 83rd minute.
The Local Lions' only goal came from Casey Tober in the game's fourth minute. PSU York falls to 3-2.
