When the Goucher College men's tennis team plays in its first NCAA Division III tournament match this weekend, there will be some York County flavor helping out the Gophers.
Elliot Diehl, a York Suburban High School graduate, was the only freshman to crack the Goucher starting lineup this year. Now, he'll be a central figure in helping the Gophers navigate the NCAA bracket.
Diehl primarily played either No. 3 or No. 4 singles this season, going 14-5 in singles play. In doubles, he played No. 3 doubles, posting a 15-6 record, good for a 29-11 overall record in his freshman season. Diehl helped Goucher knock off three-time defending Landmark Conference champion Juniata last weekend to get the Gophers into the NCAA field.
In Thursday's first-round match of the NCAA tournament, Diehl teamed up with teammate Josiah Meekins at No. 3 doubles to win 8-3 and get Goucher off to a 1-0 start in its match against Yeshiva. The Gophers went on to win the match, 5-2 to advance to Friday's second round against Carnegie Mellon. That match will begin at 10 a.m.
Diehl was the York-Adams League Class AA singles and doubles champion in 2014 and 2015 for the Trojans.
