Penn State shocks top-ranked Denver in men's lacrosse

The Penn State men’s lacrosse team upset the nation’s No. 1 team on Saturday afternoon.

Behind hat tricks from Dan Craig and Ryan Keenan, the Nittany Lions ended a 20-game win streak for Denver with a 15-10 victory to capture the Patriot Cup at Gerald Ford Stadium on the campus of Southern Methodist University.

TJ Sanders, Matt Florence and freshman Grant Ament added two goals each for the Nittany Lions (6-3), who rolled off an 11-4 scoring run from the final seconds of the first quarter to the end of the third. Kevin Hill, Mike Sutton and Brian Prestreau netted the other goals. Nick Aponte, Sanders, Hill and Keenan each assisted on two scores amd Ament had one assist.

“I think there are two sides to this,”coach Jeff Tambroni said, “number one is just being very proud of the way our guys prepared coming out of last week’s disappointing loss and just preparing the way they did showed great resiliency this week and great discipline throughout the course of today. But there is another side of perspective to this and that’s our guys and our team needs to keep coming out of this, it was a week ago we lost one game and now we’re coming off a very exciting win.”

Connor Cannizzaro’s three goals and Jack Bobzien added two to lead the Pioneers (7-1). One goal each came from Zach Miller, Tyler Pace, Colin Woolford, Sean Mayle and Joe Reid.

Penn State, which outshot Denver 33-26, got six saves from Will Schreiner.

The Nittany Lions visit Ohio State next Sunday.
