York Revolution outfielder Travis Witherspoon earns Atlantic League defensive honor

York Revolution outfielder Travis Witherspoon has been honored for his defensive play by the Atlantic League.

York Revolution center fielder Travis Witherspoon was recently named to the Atlantic League’s Red, White and Blue All-Defensive Team.

The team honors defensive excellence during the 2017 season and players are selected through voting from club managers, executives and media.

Witherspoon, part of one of the league’s top defenses in terms of fielding percentage, led the league in put outs (357) and total chances (367) among outfielders. He also recorded seven outfield assists while committing only three errors, finishing with a .992 fielding percentage. That mark tied Sean Smith’s (2014) franchise record for a single season.

As a team, York finished with a .979 team fielding percentage, tied for the league’s third-highest and matching a franchise single-season record. Not only was York’s outfield defense a notable strength, but the infield defense was strong as well, with York leading the league with 144 double plays turned.

“Our defense was a big reason for our team success this season, and Travis provided outstanding defense for us in center field every night,” Revolution manager Mark Mason said in a news release. “Anything hit in the air, if it wasn’t over the fence, our outfielders typically caught it. He made really tough plays look easy on a nightly basis, and that provided a big boost to our pitching staff.”
