Southern Maryland sweeps Revolution in four-game series in York
A difficult series for the York Revolution concluded on Monday evening with the home team suffering a four-game sweep at the hands of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, dropping the finale, 5-1.
The Revs will look to turn things around on a seven-game road trip that begins on Tuesday night in Camden.
York again got off to a promising start. Luis De La Cruz launched a home run to left-center in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead. It was De La Cruz's third home run and eighth RBI in his last five games played.
The Blue Crabs tied the game in the fourth. Cyle Hankerd slid home ahead of a throw from first baseman Andres Perez on a fielder's choice. Casey Stevenson picked up his eighth RBI of the series on the play, tying the game at 1-1.
Hankerd led off the sixth with a homer over the Arch Nemesis in left field, giving the Blue Crabs their first lead of the night at 2-1.
Southern Maryland then took control with three runs in the seventh, all with two outs, cementing the final score. Molina singled to center to produce the first insurance run, with a second scoring on a throwing error by center fielder Brandon Boggs attempting to throw out a runner at third base. Craig Maddox added an RBI single to right field.
Crabs starter Shaun Garceau (1-1) was outstanding in the win, allowing just one run on six hits over eight innings. The former Revs righty walked one and struck out eight.
York starter Rommie Lewis (2-1) suffered his first loss, tagged with two runs on four hits in five-plus innings of work.
The middle of the order did the most damage for Southern Maryland. Cleanup hitter Hankerd and fifth hitter Molina combined to reach base eight of 10 times, including each of their first four at-bats, respectively. Hankerd returned from a brief injury absence to go 2-for-3 with a home run and two walks, while scoring three of Southern Maryland's runs. Molina totaled three hits and also reached on a walk.
Southern Maryland's victory is their fifth consecutive win, maintaining a 1.5-game lead for first place in the Freedom Division at 10-7.
