The local battle for a Region 4 American Legion baseball playoff berth is about to begin.

The York-Adams American Legion League has announced its playoff dates and play-in games for its 2018 tournament.

Action starts Friday evening with two play-in games and is scheduled to conclude either Saturday, July 15, or Sunday, July 16.

The winner of the league tournament will advance to the Region 4 playoffs starting Friday, July 20, in Hanover. As the host team, Hanover Post 14 is guaranteed a berth into the regional event.

Defending league champion Pleasureville earned the overall No. 1 seed for the York-Adams playoffs by virtue of winning the East Division with a 10-1-1 record.

West Division champion Dover is the overall No. 2 seed at 11-2. Stewartstown finished 8-3 in the East Division to take the No. 3 seed, while West Division runner-up Southwest York (9-5) is the No. 4 seed. The No. 5 seed is New Oxford (8-6 in the West Division) and the No. 6 seed is Northeastern (7-5 in the East Division).

Four teams won't participate: Four teams were unable to field teams for the league playoffs: Dallastown (8-2-2 in the East Division), Glen Rock (3-9 in the East Division), Red Lion (2-8 in the East Division) and Gettysburg (1-10 in the West Division).

In addition, Suburban York (0-11 in the East Division) will not participate in the league tournament.

The biggest surprise is the absence of Dallastown, which many had considered a serious contender for the league playoff championship. Pleasureville edged Dallastown to win the 2017 York-Adams playoff crown, but both teams advanced to the Region 4 playoffs. Pleasureville then advanced to the Region 4 final a year ago before being eliminated.

Before the 2018 season began, Dallastown had difficulty coming up with enough players to field a team, but when the York City team folded, Dallastown able to attract enough players from that program to field a very competitive roster.
