The Northeastern team is off to a triumphant start at the Eastern Regional 8-10 Little League Tournament in Cranston, Rhode Island.

Northeastern captured an 8-4 triumph over Newark National, from Delaware, on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Delaware scored four runs in the second inning to take an early lead in the tournament opener, but the Northeastern team still managed to pull out the victory. The big inning for Delaware came in the top of the second inning with a bases-loaded walk scoring the first run of the game, followed by a double to center field driving in two more Delaware runners. The final Delaware run crossed on a passed ball. Northeastern subsequently ended the inning by cutting down Delaware’s base runner from third attempting to score on a wild pitch.

Pennsylvania state champion Northeastern answered in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right by Ryley Nade-Bishop scoring Drew Barshinger from third. The Northeastern boys then came to within one with a triple to right by Brandon Charleston, and tied the game on a fielder's choice.

After holding Delaware scoreless in the top of the fourth, Northeastern took the lead with a bases-loaded walk, followed by a two-run single of the bat of Brandt Johnson. The final run of the 8-4 victory came from a Bryson Neri single.

In the top of the sixth, with Delaware runners on first and second and two outs, Brandon Charleston posted a strikeout to secure the win for Northeastern.

Johnson and Charleston each drove in three runs to lead Northeastern. Northeastern’s defense played error-free baseball.

Northeastern will take on Fruitland Little League from Maryland on Monday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. in its second game of the tournament.
