LOCAL BASEBALL: Harang pitches Stoverstown to key win

• Daryl Harang pitched a four-hit shutout for Stoverstown on Thursday.
• The Tigers beat Jefferson 3-0 to improve to 18-7 in the Central League.
• Jon Kibler pitched a complete game in the loss for the Titans.

STOVERSTOWN — Coming off a disappointing loss Tuesday against Manchester, the Stoverstown Tigers were looking to restore some order when they squared off against Jefferson Thursday evening.

And who is better to restore order than a sheriff (or a deputy sheriff)?

The Tigers handed the ball to starter Daryl Harang against the Titans and the York County deputy sheriff took care of the rest. The right-hander handcuffed Jefferson’s lineup, holding the visitors to just four hits over seven scoreless innings en route to a much-needed 3-0 triumph.

Stoverstown improved to 18-7, while Jefferson fell to 12-6-2.

“This was a big win for us,” said Harang, who walked none while fanning three to improve to 3-0 on the campaign. “Especially against a team like (Jefferson). They have good players and they always play a tough game against us.”

Harang scattered his four hits allowed over four different innings while facing more than four batters in a frame just once. That set up the former York Revolution standout for a tidy night in which he needed just 90 pitches to earn the win.

“We have to keep hitting the ball like we have been,” he said after his team collected eight hits in the triumph. “Our defense has always been pretty good. Everybody is playing good parts and doing their part whenever they come into the game.”

Harang got a welcome boost from the middle of his lineup Thursday. Austin Botts, his battery mate behind the plate, collected three hits and drove in a run, while No. 3 hitter Levi Krause added two more hits and drove in a run in the triumph.

Leadoff hitter Brandon Warner, who tallied two hits, scored the game’s first run in the first inning on a ground out by Botts. He scored again in the third when Krause socked a double. Harang finished off the scoring in the third by driving in Krause with a fielder’s choice grounder.

Things could have been a little more comfortable for Harang had it not been for Jefferson starter Jon Kibler. The southpaw, who didn’t walk a batter while fanning three, did a very good job of limiting damage when he got into trouble. Unfortunately for Kibler, the deputy sheriff had the Titan lineup in lock down, preventing any chance for a serious comeback.

“It was very nice to have Daryl come back tonight and pitch like he did,” Stoverstown manager Tim Thoman said. “Jefferson is always a battle and with Kibler on the mound, you’re going against one of the best handful of pitchers in the league. So it was good to see us get on top and see Daryl in control.”

The only scary moment for Harang came in the third. After quickly getting the first two outs of the frame, Kurt Seiders ripped a triple for the Titans. Harang then hit Scott Trail with a pitch to put two runners on, but escaped by getting Jordan Higgins to bounce out to short to end the inning.

“The key against a team like Jefferson is making sure you get those 21 outs,” Thoman said. “To shut them down like Daryl did tonight is quite an accomplishment.”

The Tigers, who last won the Central League regular season title back in 2012, are hoping to capture the title once more. After getting off to a hot start to the season, Thoman’s club is battling Glen Rock, Mount Wolf, Manchester and the Titans for the coveted league crown.

Thoman, for one, is hoping that Thursday’s big win is something that can snowball into a nice winning streak as the season enters its final two weeks.

“We’ll go with what we have and hope for the best,” he said.

Glen Rock 9, Mount Wolf 5: In Mount Wolf, Dan Rogers homered and drove in three runs for as the visitors left with the victory. Justin Anderson was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Glen Rock. Connor Hood went the distance, allowing 11 hits while striking out six, walking three and earning the win. Steve Pokopec hit a two-run homer for Mount Wolf, which fell to 17-6. Glen Rock improved to 14-9.

Pleasureville 3, Dover 1: In Pleasureville, Even Heidlebaugh delivered in the clutch for Pleasureville, smacking a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth that broke a 1-1 tie. Tyler Wagner entered to pitch for Pleasureville in the top of the inning before retiring the guests in the seventh to collect the win on the mound. Devin Dellinger was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Dover.

Dillsburg 3, Manchester 2: At Dillsburg, Justin Tate led the offense for the home team, going 3 for 3 with one run scored. Also for Dillsburg, Jesse Lovejoy doubled with one run and one RBI, while Dillan Heatwole threw a complete game, striking out five and walking four. For Manchester, Dan Sepic had two doubles and one RBI, while Austin Allison went 2 for 4 with one RBI. Manchester fell to 16-9-0.

East Prospect 3, Red Lion 2: At East Prospect, Mike Androconis led the home team to the victory by throwing a complete game, striking out seven and walking one. Also for Prospect, Ryan Saxman went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored, Tanner Forry doubled with two RBIs and a run and Matt Witmer went 1 for 2 with one RBI. For Red Lion, Jake Wapinsky went 2 for 3 with a double and one run scored, Daulton Martin went 2 for 2 with one run scored, Tyler Taylor went 1 for 2 and Brett Alaimo threw a complete game, striking out five and walking two. East Prospect improved to 22-7. Red Lion fell to 18-9.

Hallam 12, Conrads 2: At Conrads, Matt Ruth led the Express by going 3 for 5, including a grand slam, with three runs scored and five RBIs. Also for Hallam, Eric McNeil went 3 for 5 with a double and two runs, Jaron Shimmel went 3 for 3 with one run and one RBI, Dalton Renn went 3 for 3 with a double and a run, Angel Matias homered, Rich Day doubled and starting pitcher Alex Tucci picked up the win on the mound, going five innings and allowing no runs, while striking out four and walking one. Tucci had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the fifth. For Conrads, Glenn Dietrich went 2 for 2 with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh. Dietrich broke up Tucci's no-hitter with a single in the fifth. Conrads' Nolan Boushell doubled. Hallam improved to 24-6.

Jacobus 8, Windsor 1: At Windsor in a regularly scheduled game, Mike Crowe led the visitors to the victory by throwing a complete game, striking out nine, walking one and allowing two hits. Also for Jacobus, Joel Buchko went 3 for 3 with a double, Mike Austin went 3 for 4, Kerry Clark went 2 for 3 with a double and Kyle Saxman doubled. For Windsor, Brandon White hit a solo homer. Jacobus improved to 20-8.

Jacobus 5, Windsor 4 (12 innings): At Windsor, Kerry Clark hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 12th with one out to clinch the victory for Jacobus in the conclusion of a suspended game. Teammate Mike Crow picked up the win on the mound. Jacobus was the home team in the game because the game was picked up from its suspended point.
