LOCAL BASEBALL: Shiloh rolling into Legion playoffs

• Shiloh finished its York-Adams American Legion regular season at 10-5-0.
• The York-Adams American Legion playoffs are slated to start on Thursday.
• Shiloh used a different pitcher in each inning in Tuesday's 13-3 win over York.

SHILOH — Five innings, with a different pitcher for each inning.

Shiloh manager Eugene DePasquale used the unique pitch-by-committee approach on Tuesday evening to close out the York-Adams American Legion regular season and prepare his team for the upcoming playoffs.

The strategy worked just fine. Shiloh wrapped up a 10-5 regular season with a 13-3 victory over York. The umpires stopped the game in the bottom of the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.

"The plan was: A, try to win the game, and B, I wanted all of those guys to pitch because we hadn't played since Saturday, and if they didn't pitch on Thursday (the first round of the playoffs), they would go a whole week without any work," DePasquale said.

Brandon Sheffer pitched the first inning for the winners. He was followed to the mound by Zach Gettys, Tyler Seiffert, Ben DePasquale and Justin Wetzel. The quintet checked York on two hits.

Gettys, a left-hander, faced just three batters and struck out all three, using 14 pitches.

"I had really good movement," Gettys said. "I was also able to throw down low so the different arm angles gave them a different look,"

Gettys also contributed with the bat, collecting two hits in three at bats and driving in four runs. He crushed a bases-loaded triple in the third inning. The left-handed hitting Gettys drove the ball to the opposite field over the left fielder's head.

"It was a fastball that I hit," he said. "I saw the center fielder and left fielder were playing pretty far in, and I tried to go to the left side of the field. I got some air under it and it went pretty far."

Gettys' hits were part of a 12-hit attack for Shiloh, which scored in every at bat.

Trent Ketterman went 3 for 3 for the winners and Jesse Anderson added two hits.

"We struggled hitting at the beginning of year, but as  the year went on, we got more comfortable in the box," Gettys said.

Shiloh, which was 1-2 at one point this season, captured nine of its final 12 games, including six of the last seven.

"Where we are now, compared to where we were at the beginning of the season, is like night and day," Eugene DePasquale said. "Some of our guys were not playing at the varsity level (in high school) and some of our guys were on the JVs. Senior Legion pitchers are college guys and high school varsity guys, so, for our guys, adjustments had to be made. Hopefully, winning six of our last seven, that's a sign that we're peaking at the right time."

The Shiloh manager doesn't have any preference for the opponent his team faces in the first round of the double-elimination playoff tournament.

"I know if we play well, we can beat anybody, and if we don't play well, we can lose to anybody," he said.

LEGION BASEBALL

Pleasureville 5, Southwestern 4: At Pleasureville, the home team led 5-1 after two innings and hung on for the victory. Beau Burris led the home team by going 2 for 2 at the plate, including a double, with two runs scored. He also came into pitch in the top of the sixth with only a one-run lead and closed out the game to pick up the save. Also for Pleasureville, Mike Davis had two RBIs, while starting pitcher Brendan Martyn threw five-plus innings on the mound, striking out five and walking four to pick up the win. Pleasureville finished the regular season at 11-2-2 and now enters playoff action on Thursday.

Suburban York 6, Dover 3: At Dover, the visitors broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh, when they plated three runs to take the lead for good. Jacob-Paul Taylor led the offense for the visitors by going 2 for 4, including a double, with two RBIs. Also for Suburban, Collin Slenker went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and started the game on the mound, throwing six innings, striking out four and walking two to record the win. Carson Holsinger went 2 for 4 with a triple for the winners.. For Dover, Konner Gibboney doubled and scored two runs, while Trey Neiman also doubled. Dover's Brayden Smith tripled.

Glen Rock 3, Northeastern 1: At Glen Rock, the home team got a complete-game, seven-hit effort from winning pitcher Matt Wentz against first-place Northeastern. Chase Summers had three hits to lead Glen Rock's eight-hit attack. Ben Trego added two hits and an RBI for the winners. Northeastern fell to 12-3. Glen Rock finished 6-9.

CENTRAL

LEAGUE GAME

Mount Wolf 7, Dillsburg 1: At Mount Wolf, the Wolves trailed 1-0 after four innings, but scored seven unanswered runs to capture the victory. Wolves starter Mark Burnside threw six innings, striking out eight and walking none. Burnside also contributed at the plate by going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Also for the Wolves, Grant Myers went 2 for 2 with a double, Ryan Wentzel went 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored, Dustin Kuhn doubled with two RBIs and two walks, Dan Dierdorff doubled with two runs scored and John Mehring doubled. Mount Wolf improved to 12-3.
