Jen Sparks said her Colony Park North team is eager to defend its Mike Elicker Memorial Team Challenge title on Sunday at Suburban Bowlerama, starting at 9 a.m.

Sparks and her teammates, Travis Sparks, Greg Elicker, Alex Ludwig and Chad Ruby, rallied from behind to win the title last year.

The tournament is named after Mike Elicker, who worked at Lincolnway Lanes for 40 years and died in May 2018 at age 78. He was the grandfather of Jen Sparks and Greg Elicker.

"We're definitely looking forward to defending our title," Sparks said. "We have the same team as last year, and we believe we have a good chance of winning."

Sparks acknowledged the high caliber of teams in the tournament, but said: "We're ready for all of them."

She added: "You're bowling against the best of the best in this tournament, and it makes winning that much sweeter. Last year was the most emotional win of my life, and we want to win for 'Pap' again this year."

The tournament, in its third year, features 12 teams from six centers. Teams consist of five bowlers, with any combination of men and women. The top three to six average bowlers from each center received automatic invitations to compete on a team.

Teams roll three games (league style) and the total number of pins over 3,000 carry over to match play.  Teams then roll 12 games of Baker match play (one game against each team). In the Baker team format, individual bowlers roll frames 1 and 6, 2 and 7, 3 and 8, 4 and 9 and 5 and 10. Teams receive plus or minus the number of pins over or under 200 per game and 30 bonus pins for a win.

The top three teams after the Baker team match play advance to the stepladder final, which consists of a two-game match-play set. If teams tie one game each, there will be a one-ball, sudden-death roll-off to determine the winner.

First place is worth $1,800 per team, or $360 per bowler. The winning team also receives the Mike Elicker Memorial Traveling Cup. The event will be live streamed at fb.me/yorkcountymatchplay.
