Area bowlers can start the new year by competing in a variety of regional tournaments.
Here are some January events:
►The York Area Handicap Doubles Tournament is scheduled for 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 7, at East Lincoln Lanes. This month's format is a nine-pin no-tap. Teams roll four games and one in four cash. The handicap is 90 percent of 230 for each bowler. The entry fee is $45.
This is the third in a series of seven monthly tournaments. Bowlers who compete in five of the seven tournaments are eligible for a random drawing for a 50-inch flat-screen television.
►The York-Adams Youth/Hall of Fame Classic is slated for 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 21, at Hanover Bowling Centre. Youth bowlers are paired with York-Adams United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame members and area champs. All York-Adams USBC youth members are eligible. Youth bowlers are divided into two divisions: below 150 average and 150 average and above. Bowlers roll three games of nine-pin no-tap.
The youth bowlers' scores will be added with the scores of the three Hall of Famer games to determine prize winners. One in four bowlers earn scholarships. The advance entry fee is $20 and the walk-in fee is $25. For information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
►The York County Senior Match Play Tournament is set for Saturday, Jan. 27, Sunday, Jan. 28, and Saturday, Feb. 3. The four-game qualifying sessions will be held noon at Hanover Bowling Centre, Saturday, Jan. 27, and 11 a.m. at Suburban Bowlerama, Sunday, Jan. 28. The field will be cut after eight games.
One in three bowlers from each age group (50-59), (60-66) and (67 plus) advance to the six-game modified match-play finals, which will be held 10 a.m. at Lion Bowl, Saturday, Feb. 3. The entry fee is $60 before Jan. 26 and $75 after that date. For information, call (717) 244-615.
►The Hayden Mitchell Memorial Tournament is slated for 10 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 28, at Colony Park Lanes North. The format consists of six games of qualifying. The top six bowlers advance, with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds receiving byes and No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5.
Winners of that round advance, with the higher seed facing the No. 1 seed and the next highest seed facing the No. 2 seed. The two winners bowl for the title. The entry fee is $60 and first place is worth $1,000. For information, call 848-6262.
►East Lincoln Lanes hosts Friday Night Fights the first and third Fridays of the month. Action starts at 7 p.m. The entry fee is $30. The center also runs a nine-pin no-tap tournament at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Bowlers roll four games and drop the lowest score.
