Joe Parrini and Carson Bacha represented Central York High School golf extremely well during Monday's Philadelphia Junior PGA Championship.
Now the two will have a chance to represent the high school at the prestigious 42nd Boys' Junior PGA Championship from July 31-Aug. 3.
Parrini won the 36-hole invitational at Concord Country Club in Chadds Ford, posting a 6-under 136 score over the two rounds. He bested Bacha by two strokes, who finished in second place, with a 4-under score.
With par set at 71, Parrini finished with an even-par opening round, but had an up-and-down 18 holes. He opened by going 4 under through his first 10 holes, but a double-bogey on No. 13 lost him his momentum and saw him limp to the finish. It set him three strokes back of Bacha and Cal Buonocore, who both went out and shot 3-under in the opening round.
However, Parrini turned it on in the afternoon, shooting a 6-under 65 and leap-frogging everyone ahead of him to win by two strokes. After finishing his first nine, which was the back nine, at 1 under, Parrini found his groove, making birdies on five consecutive holes to get to 6 under. Bacha posted a 1-under mark in his second round to finish comfortably in second.
"I was just in the zone, really, at that time," Parrini said of his final nine holes of the day. "That's what took my round from being good at 1 under to being really solid at 6 under, and I burned the edge on my last three holes for birdie, so I easily could've shot in the 20s on my back nine the second round."
Dover's Logan Snyder was also in the 77-player field, but finished his day with a two-round score of plus-28 with scores of 83 and 87.
Parrini and Bacha were just two of three players to shoot under par for the day, with Ben Pochet turning in a 1-under total, earning him the first alternate spot.
Even though Bacha finished second behind Parrini for the entire event, he did wind up finishing in first in the boys' 13-15 age division.
This is the first time that the Junior PGA Championship is taking 144 qualifiers, so each sectional had the opportunity to send two qualifiers, opening the door for Bacha to join Parrini.
Past participants in the Boys' Junior PGA Championship include Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Stewart Cink and Phil Mickelson.
This year's tournament will be held at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri.
"It's definitely going to be a cool experience," Parrini said. "This is my first time playing in it and Carson's first time playing in it, as well. It'll be kind of neat to experience it together, but we're there to get some work done."
