Shorb, Kennedy to square off for WYCAGA championship
A combined 40th Women's York County Amateur Golf Association championship will be won between Connie Shorb and Amy Kennedy this year.
Whether or not it's the 32nd for Shorb or the ninth for Kennedy will be decided in Thursday's championship match at Cool Creek Golf Club.
After Shorb (Country Club of York) and Kennedy (CCY) won comfortably in their quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Wednesday's victories in the semifinals were done so even more convincingly. Both players needed less than half of the back nine to advance to the championship, with Kennedy rolling past Paula Bauer (Range End G.C.), 7&5, and Shorb won 7&6 over Susan Konstalid (Range End G.C.).
It'll be the second year in a row that the two longtime friends will face each other in the final match, with Kennedy taking last year's title at Out Door Country Club on the 17th hole, 2&1. While Shorb has the 31 crowns to her name, it's been Kennedy's tournament lately, as she's going for her fourth consecutive win and fifth victory in six years.
In the championship flight consolation matches, Kristie Hamp (Regents' Glen C.C.) defeated Susi Guinn (Hanover C.C.), 5&4, while Carolyn Karge (Range End G.C.) defeated Tally Leeper (Valley Green G.C.) 5&4, to advance to Thursday's consolation finals.
First flight: Jocelyn Abel (Bon Air C.C.) will face Lynn Fiery (Hanover C.C.) in Thursday's first flight championship match after Abel defeated JoAnn Dietz (Cool Creek), 6&4, and Fiery took out Maggie Ryan (Hanover C.C.), 5&3.
In the first flight consolation bracket, the match will be between Betty Winner (Bon Air C.C.) and Sue Joiner (Cool Creek). Winner advanced on Wednesday after Carol Enders (Valley Green G.C.) withdrew and Joiner defeated Patricia Blanchard (CCY), 3&2.
Tee times: The match between Winner and Joiner will be the first one off on Thursday at 8 a.m., with Abel vs. Fiery to follow at 8:08 a.m.
Hamp vs. Karge will tee off at 8:16 a.m. and the championship match between Kennedy and Shorb will round out everything with an 8:24 a.m. tee time.
