Spring Grove's Hali Flickinger wins in return to pool


Spring Grove's Hali Flickinger was back in the pool over the weekend, swimming competitively for the first time since the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in August.

Spring Grove grad Hali Flickinger competed in the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin, Texas over the weekend, her first competitive event since the 2016 Olympics.

Flickinger was taking part in the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin, Texas, competing in three events and making the finals in two.

Sunday, Flickinger took part in the 200-meter butterfly, the event in which she made the finals at the Olympics and placed seventh.

She qualified for the finals with the fastest time in the preliminaries, posting a time of 2 minutes, 10.32 seconds. In the finals, she improved on her preliminary time by more than 1 1/2 seconds, winning the event with a time of 2:08.77.  Her time in the Olympic finals was 2:07.71.

Saturday, Flickinger finished second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:59.20. She lost to Olympic gold medalist and former University of Georgia teammate Melanie Margalis, who passed Flickinger on the final turn to finish with a time of 1:58.78. Flickinger finished ahead of Canada's Kayla Sanchez (1:59.81), who took bronze.
