Skipjacks get off to a winning start in York

The 2016-2017 season for the Skipjacks Hockey Club began on a winning note over the weekend against the Jersey Shore Whalers.

Both the under-18 and under-16 Midget AAA teams swept their Jersey Shore Whalers counterparts at the York Ice Arena in two games apiece.

The under-18 team earned 5-0 win on Saturday and a 6-0 win on Sunday. The under 16-team won 9-2 on Saturday and 5-1 on Sunday.

It was the York debut for the Skipjacks.

Next weekend, the Connecticut Junior Rangers come the York Ice Arena to challenge the Skipjacks on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the under-16 game begins at 5 p.m., with the under-18 team taking the ice at 7:15 p.m. On Sunday, the under-16 game begins at 10 a.m. and the under-18 game starts at 12:15 p.m.

York College women blanked in soccer: The York College women's soccer team was shut out for the second consecutive day on Sunday when the Spartans fell to McDaniel College 2-0 during the second day of the 2016 York College Soccer Classic in York.

McDaniel, which is ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division III, improved to 3-0. York fell to 2-2. McDaniel had a 9-3 edge in shots on goal and 6-2 edge in corners.

Brittany Cullison had seven saves in a losing cause.

The Spartans head out on the road on Wednesday as they travel to Gettysburg College for their annual match up with the Bullets. Game time at Clark Field is set for 7 p.m.
