Tennis For Kids program returns for its 26th year

  • The York-area Tennis for Kids program starts on Monday June 27.
  • The program continues through July 29 at sites throughout York and Adams counties.

The York-area Tennis For Kids program is returning for its 26th season, starting Monday, June 27.

J.C. Quintana, 8, of York City, eyes a return during the first day of the Tennis for Kids program at Farquhar Park on Monday, June 22, 2015.

The program provides free tennis lessons, three days a week, from June 27 until July 29 at many of its locations. The program is open to children ages 7 through 16 and the organization says no child has ever been turned away. In cases of financial need, rackets are provided by the program.

“The primary purpose of Tennis For Kids is to give children from all walks of life, without regard to religion, race, sex, ethnic or national origin, the opportunity to learn, without financial cost, the fundamentals of a lifetime recreational activity, the opportunity for expanded social contact early in life and the opportunity to fill often-empty hours, particularly summer hours, with a wholesome experience," said Stef Campisi, the local president of Tennis For Kids.

"While the program is free to children, it is made possible through the generosity of businesses, some municipalities, some civic groups and many individuals. Only its site directors and members of their staff, numbering some 200, get paid. Officers and members of the board of directors are not compensated in any form."

The program has been enrolling an average of 1,700 children each summer in recent years. This year, there will be 18 locations in operation, including: Farquhar Park, Penn Park, Dallastown High School, Jacobus, Loganville and Springfield parks, Hellam Recreation Complex, Red Lion High School, South Western High School, Stewartstown Community Park, Spring Grove High School, Northeastern High School, York Suburban High School, York Suburban Middle School, Springettsbury Recreation Complex, York College, New Oxford High School and Gettysburg High School.

The sessions run from 9-11 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, weather permitting, or unless determined otherwise. Of note, the sessions at Northeastern will be held Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, June 27 through July 15. Those at Stewartstown will run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 27 through July 15.

Initial registration will be held at each site on June 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. However, the program will accept children through July 25.

The courts at Dover, West York and Penn State York were not available this year.
