Over the course of the last few weekends, eight members from Skyline Gymnastics earned berths into the regional competition of the USA Gymnastics (USAG) Junior Olympics.
The eight qualifiers, ranging from Level 8 through Level 10, advanced past the state competition out of nearly 600 gymnasts.
At the USAG Pennsylvania Level 8 competition, a total of 273 gymnasts competed during the weekend of March 12 and 13 in Downingtown, with four members from the York County team advancing to the USAG Region 7 Championships on April 2-3 in Wingate, Pennsylvania. In the Junior B, Lower Division, Olivia Pitzer placed third on the vault, fifth on floor and sixth in the all-around competition. In the Junior C, Upper Division, Anna Richwine was the state champion in both the balance beam and floor and placed fourth in the all-around. In Senior A, Lower, Kasey Smith finished fifth on the vault and sixth in the all-around. In Senior B, Lower, Brenna Leister was the state champion in the vault, took fifth on the balance beam, second on the floor and second in the all-around.
In the Level 9 competition, which took place on March 19 and 20 in Chambersburg, two Skyline gymnasts qualified for the regional competition out of 192 gymnasts. In the Senior B Division, Emma Brown was the state champion in the balance beam and the floor, while finishing second in the all-around. In the Senior D Division, West York senior Paige Landes was the balance beam state champion, took third on the floor and finished fourth in the all-around. Both Brown and Landes will go on to compete in the regional championships on April 9 and 10 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with a chance to qualify for the Junior Olympic Level 9 Eastern Nationals held from April 29-May 1 in Virginia Beach.
In the Level 10 competition, held on March 19 and 20 in Chambersburg, two Skyline gymnasts qualified for the regional competition out of 108 gymnasts. In Junior A, Jenna Ferguson finished in fourth place on the balance beam and seventh in the all-around. In Senior B, Northeastern senior Sarah McCarty was the state champion in the vault, finished second in the floor and placed 10th in the all-around. Both girls will go on to compete in the regional championships held in Virginia Beach on April 9 and 10 with the chance to qualify for the Junior Olympic Level 10 Nationals on May 7 and 8 in Fort Worth, Texas.
The regional competitions will consist of gymnasts from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
