The Spring Grove Rockets competitive cheer squad recently qualified to attend the Universal Cheerleaders Association’s National High School Cheerleading Championships to be held this weekend at Walt Disney World Resort in Kissimmee, Florida.

The event will be televised  throughout the weekend on ESPN and ESPN2.

Many of the members of the competitive squad also do team cheering for sports such as football and basketball.

To be able to attend the event, the team had to achieve certain levels of proficiency, demonstrated by competing and placing high enough in a required number of UCA competitions in the season.

Doing so earned them a bid to attend. However, securing the bid was only the first step.

As a co-curricular group within the district, competitions at this level are not included in the school budget, so student groups are expected to pitch in and raise the funds to cover expenses. The team needed to raise funds for costs such as travel, lodging and registration for the team and the coach

With the backing of the athletic boosters and the support of fans, the squad has been working hard on fundraising, as well as its routines and stunts.
