Walthall leads York College men's swimming team to victory
YORK, PA – The York College swimming team rolled to a 158-102 non-conference victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday in York.
The Spartans improve to 3-4 overall as they have won two straight. The Presidents fall to 3-2 with the loss.
The Spartans received a big day from All-American Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa) as he picked up a trio of individual wins on the day. Walthall was far from the only star of the day as York won ten of the 14 events on the day.
The meet started with a 200 medley relay win from the foursome of Morgan Schreiber (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Walthall, Trevor Brinton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove), and Jacob McConnell (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington). They combined to notch a time of 1:37.32 to win the race by just under seven seconds.
The Presidents earned a win in the 1000 freestyle but Walthall got those points back with his first win of the day as he was victorious in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.34. Teammate Artem Peshenko (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) finished second while freshman Colin Sload-Diehl (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) placed third as the Spartans swept the top three spots in the race.
Washington & Jefferson earned the top two spots in the 50 backstroke. Walthall responded by winning the 50 breaststroke as the senior All-American cruised to the win with a time of 26.96. Teammate Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished second with a time of 28.81.
Brinton earned a win in the 100 fly as the freshman completed the race in a time of 56.21. Teammate Nick Leidy (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) was the runner-up with a time of 57.97. McConnell kept the Spartan victory train rolling with a win in the 50 free, sprinting the pool in a time of 22.75. McConnell came right back and won his second consecutive race with a victory in the 100 freestyle. He won the race with a time of 50.11 to earn nine points for York.
Schreiber earned a win in the 100 backstroke as he edged W&J's Nicholas Willison for the victory. Schreiber posted a time of 55.18 while Willison finished with a time of 55.19.
Walthall picked up his third win of the day with first place finish in the 100 breaststroke as he earned a time of 58.13. The Green and White swept all three spots as Timmerman was second and McCullough was third for York.
After the Presidents won the 500 free, Brinton earned his second win of the day as he was the victor in the 50 fly with a time of 24.40.
Leidy, Timmerman and Billy Sieck (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) racked up points for York in the 400 IM as they placed second, third and fourth respectively.
York closed out the win in the 200 free relay as Peshenko, McConnell, Nick Foltz (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley), and Brinton combined to post a time of 1:30.18.
The Spartans close out their first semester schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 pm meet at Dickinson College in Carlisle.
