Freshman sparks York College women's swim team to triumph
YORK, PA – The York College women's swimming squad got three first place finishes from freshman Maddy Mann (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) as the Spartans edged Washington & Jefferson 134-128 in a non-conference meet on Saturday in York.
The Spartans snap a five meet losing streak as they improve to 2-5 overall while the Presidents suffer their first loss of the year as they are now 4-1.
The meet started with the Spartans capturing a second and a third place finish in the 200 medley relay. The A squad consisting of Julia Bogdanski (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), Samantha Hay (Bangor, Pa./Bangor), Kate McConaghy (Phoenixville, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), and Taylor Witte (University Park, Md./St. John's College) posted a time of 2:01.08 for the runner up finish.
Mann posted her first win of the day in the 1000 free as she traversed the pool in 11:00.08 to win going away. Mann won the race by over 26 seconds. Teammate Brianna Blackwell (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) finished third in the event as she recorded a time of 11:46.59.
Mann got right back in the pool to earn win number two as she was victorious in the 200 free. She finished with a time of 1:59.34 while Blackwell notched a fourth place finish for York.
Bogdanski and Sara Zalkind (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) notched a combined seven points in the 50 backstroke as Bogdanski finished second and Zalkind placed third.
York got important points in the 50 breaststroke as Chloe Fealtman (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) won the event with a time of 27.00. Hay placed second as the sophomore was just second at 27.01.
The Presidents picked up a first and second place finish in the 100 fly but Kacey Banks (Silver Spring, Md./Spencerville Adventist Academy) did finish third to pick three team points for York. Andrea Sturgis (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) placed fourth and Maria Allera (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) took fifth to earn another three team points. Washington & Jefferson captured 13 points in the 50 free as they captured the first two places in the race.
Mann got the Spartans back on track in the 100 free as the freshman standout won the event with a time of 56.11 as she earned nine more points for the Green and White.
The Spartans captured two of the top three spots in the 100 backstroke as Bogdanski continued her strong showing with a second place finish as she touched the wall in a time of 1:05.49. Zalkind placed third with a time of 1:08.47.
Hay notched an important win in the 100 breaststroke as she was victorious with a time of 1:13.41. Fealtman recorded a third place finish, good for three points for York.
Sturgis earned another York win in the 500 freestyle as the freshman recorded a time of 5:31.84. Blackwell recorded a third place finish for the Green and White.
The Presidents closed the gap with a one-two finish in the 50 fly. Allera, Sturgis and McConaghy finished third, fourth and fifth to combine for six points in the event.
Banks put together an impressive race in the 400 IM as she finished second by just 0.35 seconds. Teammate Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) finished third for York.
The Presidents won the final 200 free relay but the Spartans earned a second and third place finish in the event to earn the six-point win. The foursome of Witte, Danielle Werner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton), Sturgis and Mann combined for a time of 1:46.36.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday when they head to Dickinson College for a non-conference meet at 1:00 pm in Carlisle.
