Jen Sparks credits her Wednesday night doubles partner and husband, Travis, for helping her post a 224 average for 96 games at Colony Park Lanes North during the 2014-15 season.

Her average led all York County female bowlers.

"Travis definitely helps me bowl better," Jen said. "He helps me focus, relax and have fun."

She said Travis takes some of the pressure off of her, reminding her they are bowling as a team.

When Jen is struggling on the lanes, she will ask for Travis' advice. He may tell her to change her ball speed, where she's playing on the lanes or to move left or right.

"Travis knows what he's talking about," said Jen, who ended Stephanie Whipple-Miller's five-year reign with the highest average for a York County woman. "I'm always willing to listen. In fact, I will seek out advice from other bowlers, too."

Sparks, a 27-year-old right-hander, was an outstanding junior league bowler. She won seven state titles, earned 18 Pennsylvania Junior Bowling Tour (PJBT) crowns and was named PJBT Bowler of the Year on two occasions. Her high series is an 868, which includes back-to-back 300 games.

"Leading the county in average is a nice accomplishment, one that I'm very proud of," she said. "I thought it would happen someday, just not this soon."

Sparks is one of three York County women who averaged 220 or higher for the 2014-15 season. Whipple-Miller posted a 220 average for 81 games at Colony Park North, while Kristen Gessner compiled a 220 mark for 81 games at Hanover Bowling Centre.

Note: Colony Park Lanes North hosts The King of the Hill Thanksgiving Tournament at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25. The format features a single-elimination main bracket with a consolation bracket. Bowlers must lose twice in order not to cash. The entry fee is $34 per person, if paid before Thursday, Nov. 19, and $40 per person after that date. First place is expected to pay $500, based on 128 entries. For information, call (717) 848-6262.
