START PROGRAM

York College will play host to its 13th edition of the START program, designed to recruit college students and local fans into sports officiating, beginning Sunday, Oct. 25, and continuing on Nov. 1 and Nov. 8. START stands for "Students of Today are Referees of Tomorrow." Sports offered during the Fall 2015 START program — based on interest levels from applicants — could be basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball and lacrosse. A minimum of five candidates in a sport should register before Friday, Oct. 16, for that sport to be included in the program. Late applicants will be included in any program that has enough candidates to run. The program will be held in Room 140 of the Humanities Center on York College's main campus. The meetings will begin each night at 6 and last approximately 75 minutes. The program is open to anyone at least 18. There is no cost to college students with ID cards. Participants without a current college student ID card must pay the normal PIAA $30 registration fee. Candidates will be able to take the PIAA officiating test at the end of the Nov. 8 meeting. To register for the program, candidates should send an e-mail to Capital Athletic Conference Commissioner Tom Byrnes (tbyrnes@cacsports.com) by Friday, Oct. 16, indicating which sport they're interested in becoming a PIAA official.
