York YMCA swimmer Courtney Harnish was part of a relay team that set a Pan Am Games record in the 4-x-200-meter freestyle event on Thursday night in Toronto.

The American team of Harnish, Allison Schmitt, Gillian Ryan and Kiera Janzen won gold with a time of 7 minutes, 54.32 seconds. The previous record for the Pan Am Games was 8:01.18, set by the United States in 2011.

The silver-medal-winning team, Brazil, came in more than two full seconds behind the Americans with a time of 7:56.36. Canada earned bronze with a time of 7:59.36.

Harnish swam the third leg of the event for Team USA in 1:59.39, topping a career-best time of 2:00.46 in an individual 200 free event. It was the first event of the Pan Am Games for Harnish, who will be a junior this year at West York High School.

Harnish will be back in the pool on Saturday, competing in her strongest event, the 800-meter free.

Harnish's York YMCA teammate, Meghan Small, will also be swimming on Saturday, racing in her strongest event, the 200-meter individual medley. Small, who's from Lineboro, Maryland, and will be a senior this upcoming year at Manchester Valley High School, finished 10th in the 200-meter breaststroke on Wednesday.
