LETTER: Beautiful music, historic bandstand

York Dispatch
YorkDispatch

The Spring Garden Band played in the Farquhar Park bandstand on June 7 for a concert sponsored by the Avenues Neighborhood Association. The band played beautiful music, both classical and popular, and they played with skill and passion, for an appreciative audience.

It was a lovely day to sit under huge shade trees, listening to music and enjoying the beauty of a park whose land was originally the gift of A. B. Farquhar, a prominent industrialist in York in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The park and the bandstand are both more than 100 years old.

The Spring Garden Band dates to the Civil War era when bands accompanied troops into battle and provided a musical respite for them when not in battle.

All these historic treasures in my neighborhood remind me that the history of our community is very unique and very special and that we must strive to preserve and protect it.

The band will play the bandstand again Aug. 2 at 2 pm.
