LETTER: Stay the course in Central York
I am writing to urge the citizens of Central York School District to re-elect Erik Wolfgang, Barbara Johnson, Karl Peckmann and myself, Gregory Lewis, to our school board.
Why? Simply because the current board has ensured our district is the best in York County. We have cut $11 million dollars of fat out of the budget, thereby keeping the tax rate very flat and one of the lowest in the county. In fact, the district has been recognized as one of the most efficient in Pennsylvania.
Despite tight dollars, we have maintained smaller class sizes, not furloughed a single employee or cancelled a single program, unlike other local districts. We are leading the way in individual education customization and incorporating 21st century technology into our classrooms. Our students are issued iPads in lieu of most books, allowing them to collaborate worldwide in their studies.
We have just recently negotiated very fair contracts with our teachers and staff that provided generous pay raises while controlling rapidly rising healthcare expenses. The net result is a less than 1 percent increase to our budget.
We are actively seeking a JROTC program and are a model for partnering with local businesses to establish sponsorship and funding of business-related courses, "Panther Perks" being a great example.
In short, Central York is on a roll, and it's not an accident. The current board is far from a "rubber stamp." We work well together, balance competing priorities smartly, collectively solve problems well, and are very excited about our future. There are no "rascals" who should be removed. I urge our electorate to stay the course with the four of us, as I know we are all very proud of CYSD. Please study the remaining candidates closely, there may be a rascal or two in that group.
GREGORY W. LEWIS
