The Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program was held on May 2nd at Central York High School. Thirty gifted students from our community competed for $40,000 in scholarships. Rose Arbittier from Dallastown Area High School was named the Distinguished Young Woman of York County.

This was the 50th anniversary of the scholarship program. It is a huge tribute to the York community to have sustained it, conducted completely by volunteers, for this many years. The program now accepts nearly double the number of participants. In addition, the amount of scholarships awarded has multiplied nearly 10 times since the beginning.

Many founders of the local program returned for the 50th celebration. It was an honor to thank them for laying the foundation for this success, which started as a community service project of the York Jaycees — The Junior Miss Program.

The evening was a celebration of our youth's talent and achievement. The West York Area High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Rod Meckley, was featured throughout the event. The York County Senior Honors Choir, directed by Randy Yoder, gave a brilliant performance as well. Students from the School of Culinary Arts provided fabulous food for the candidates. Students from Central York High School, under the guidance of Mark Zortman, excelled with the technical aspects of the production.

Special thanks to the program's major sponsors: Jack Giambalvo Family of Dealerships, Chloe´ Eichelberger, Perform Group LLC, York Traditions Bank, York College of Pennsylvania, GLATFELTER, Win Bradley, The Graham Group, The Bon-Ton, The Financial Advisory Group, Glatfelter Insurance Group, Shipley Energy and Members 1st Federal Credit Union.

Sincere appreciation goes to the additional individuals and companies making this opportunity possible. The students in the York County program are an inspiration to all of us.
