LETTER: Don't treat just half an addiction problem

York Dispatch

Heroin, cigarettes and sometimes alcohol are double addictions. This is why they are so hard to overcome.

Let me explain about double addictions. There is a physical addiction, which means if you stop your body suffers withdrawal. This could also apply to coffee and products containing caffeine. Then there is the psychological addiction. Both addictions must be treated at the same time.

Another strategy could be to treat the psychological addiction first, but if you treat only physical addiction the relapse rate will be very high, if not 100 percent because you only treated half the problem.
