LETTER: SpiriTrust Lutheran sets free tax-filing record
On behalf of SpiriTrust Lutheran Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the individuals and organizations that helped achieve a record-setting free tax filing season in York County this year. Through their generosity we were able to prepare and file nearly 3,400 free federal, state and local income tax returns on behalf of low- to moderate-income individuals and households in York County.
By filing these returns our team of volunteers helped to secure the return of roughly $5.2 million in refund dollars to our York County community and saved our neighbors more than $600,000 in out-of-pocket tax preparation fees. For some, these dollars pay for essential basic needs like food, clothing, child care and rent or mortgage payments. For others these dollars help pay off debt, are deposited into a savings account or pay for next semester's college tuition.
This was a record-setting year with immeasurable positive impact on the quality of life for our family members, friends and neighbors. It could not have been achieved without the dedication and perseverance of 52 volunteers and organizations, including Dover Area School District, Grace Fellowship Church, PNC Community Development Banking, Rotz Development LLC, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, United Way of York County, White Rose Credit Union and York College of Pennsylvania.
In addition, we would like everyone to know that our new program office located at 907 Roosevelt Ave. in York will remain open, year-round to serve those with under $53,000 in household income and have a need for free income-tax related assistance related to prior year returns, amendment or dispute resolution.
This permanent site also will serve as the home for SpiriTrust Lutheran Financial Education & Coaching, a free service that empowers individuals and families to learn about and begin implementing wiser decisions to improve their financial future.
