EDITORIAL: Don't vent — vote
We are big fans of Jan Snyder. The Dover Township woman, in her 70s, is still — according to her own description — "sharp" and "active."
We agree wholeheartedly. And her energy is directed at a cause that we at the Dispatch can really support.
Jan makes it her mission to encourage people to register to vote.
She does this by carrying voter registration forms with her wherever she goes. When she fills up her tank at a local gas station, she strikes up a conversation with locals she meets there and basically asks them if they are registered.
If they are not, she asks them if they would like to be registered, and if they answer in the affirmative, she gives them a registration form.
We really like her style.
Here in York County, about 70,000 eligible voters are not registered. Often those who go unregistered are those for whom casting a vote could be incredibly beneficial.
Thanks to a new initiative, eligible Pennsylvanians can register online at register.votespa.com.
Between Jan Snyder's advocacy and the new convenience of signing up online, there should be no reason for 70,000 Yorkers to go unheard.
Your vote counts. State, local and national representatives will only act in your best interest if you demand they do so.
So if you happen to be at the gas station and see Jan, take her up on her offer to help you get registered. Otherwise, jump online and sign up in a matter of minutes.
This is your democracy. Celebrate that fact by exercising your right to vote.
