Thumbs up: The York County SPCA's high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter clinic, which opened almost a year ago, is performing surgeries on about 30 animals a day. That's up from 20, and the target is to eventually operate on 35 animals a day.

If you don't think that's a big deal, consider this:

Studies show one female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in just seven years, while one female dog and her offspring can produce up to 67,000 puppies in six years.

The goal of the new clinic is to reduce the number of unwanted litters and, hopefully, the number of animals euthanized, executive director Melissa Smith said.

To schedule an appointment, call the shelter at (717) 764-6109 or visit www.ycspca.org.

Thumbs down: York County recently witnessed a horrific example of the cruel fate that can await unwanted animals.

Two kittens in a cardboard box were thrown from a black SUV onto Interstate 83 near the Emigsville exit earlier this month. A good Samaritan rescued the cats, which were not injured, but the driver of the vehicle was not identified.

Particularly maddening is the fact the kittens were discarded just minutes away from the York County SPCA, where the people in the SUV could have gone to turn over the animals.

The good news: There were 20 applicants hoping to adopt the kittens just days after the incident.

Thumbs up: To the Democratic Party of York County, which decided to cancel its yearly picnic next month rather than compete with the second annual Equality Fest in York City.

The events were scheduled for the same date and time, creating a logistical nightmare for anyone hoping to attend both.

The Dems axed the picnic and are encouraging people to were planning to attend to instead check out Equality Fest, which runs from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Royal Square.

Bob Kefauver, the local party leader, said Equality Fest embodies the values Democrats hold dear, such as marriage equality.

"Let's just support this one event in a very big way," he said.
