Thumbs up: To those who give — their blood.

The American Red Cross has put out a call for more people to roll up their sleeves and help make up for a blood shortage that typically occurs around this time of year.

Twenty percent of the supply the organization receives comes from high school and college students — and those donors are scarce during the summer months, according to senior account executive Beverly Stambaugh.

The Red Cross is particularly low on platelets, one of the three main parts of the blood that hospitals need for donations, and a Memorial Day weekend blood drive didn't do much to replenish the supply.

"We're asking you, please, please, come give," Stambaugh said.

Thumbs up: To Robert Godfrey, for hanging in there and seeing his new York City wine bar come to fruition.

Godfrey and his business partner have spent the past three years building a plan for The Handsome Cab, which has been alive online for about as long, with a website more sophisticated than those of many established restaurants.

Work has begun to gut and renovate the wine bar's future home at 104-106 N. George St. in York City, a former dry cleaners that's been vacant for years. Construction will likely take about six months, meaning The Handsome Cab could open for business in early 2016.

"We're full speed ahead. I'm sure there's going to be this delay or that delay or things we didn't expect," Godfrey said. "But at this point, there really is no turning back."

Thumbs down: To political candidates who have yet to gathered up their campaign signs.

For months, they served their purpose well — or not, in most cases — but now they're litter.
