The birthrate in the United States continues to fall to the point that we have not been replacing ourselves for the past decade. And, with roughly 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, our population is aging rapidly. These statistics came to light last month when Speaker of the House Paul Ryan urged Americans to have more babies. You see, a slowing and aging population is a drag on the economy and is detrimental to the promises of Social Security and Medicare that America has made to our nation’s elderly.

It’s curious that at the same time we face these demographic problems, the U.S. is looking to deport nearly 700,000 young people – the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals recipients (DACA), or Dreamers as they have come to be known. These young adults were brought to this country illegally at an average age of 5 years old. Having spent the past 2 decades in the United States, they are, for all intents and purposes, Americans. They’ve attended American schools. Many have attended American colleges and many serve in America’s armed forces. If Congress does nothing, they will be sent to countries that will be foreign lands to them.

At a time when we desperately need young people, we could be sending nearly 700,000 away. Not only is this cruel, but it is not in America’s best interest. We need these young people and they need us. Please call Rep. Scott Perry (202-225-5836), and Senators Pat Toomey (202-224-4264) and Bob Casey (202-224-6324) and urge them to support the DREAM act.
