LETTER: Partisan bickering must stop

U.S. Rep. Scott Perry, R-Dillsburg, talks about having a "meaningful Memorial Day" during the annual York County Memorial Day at Veterans Memorial Park, Sunday, May 29, 2017. John A. Pavoncello photo

Right-wing conservative, almost reactionary, Republicans like Kevin Cummings and his letter to the editor of July 10 take almost vindictive pleasure in bashing American liberals. He accuses liberals of being fascists, physically disrupting meetings of lawmakers like Rep. Perry, and attacking the NRA, along with the 1st and 2nd Amendments. I claim all of these charges against liberalism is, to coin a modern phrase, "fake news."

Most of Mr. C's letter triumphantly extols a government program, Project Exile, instituted over two decades ago in Richmond, VA. Mr. Cummings proudly states the Exile "brought the murder rate down from the second highest per capita to the second lowest per capita."

He says he tried to get a similar program started in NYC but was refused "because of the racial demographic of those sentenced."

But how correct is Mr. Cummings in his assessment? Less than a year ago The Richmond Times-Dispatch, Aug. 1, 2016, headlined: Project Exile in Doubt as Richmond Murders Rise. The paper stated that "Richmond's current wave of homicides ... raise questions about ... Richmond's 'Project Exile,' a widely hailed and copied program credited with cutting Richmond's violent crime nearly two decades ago."

LETTER: I stand with Rep. Scott Perry

Further, the journal says that "the efficacy of Project Exile has been questioned in studies and the current rise in murders and drop in firearms could be a coincidence." In fact, the newspaper points out that one of the current leaders of Exile says that the members still meet but, "I think Project Exile, as Project Exile, doesn't exist." So much for Mr. Cummings’ wonderful crime prevention scheme.

Better yet I implore citizens like Mr. Cummings to lay down their poison pens and allow the rest of us to enjoy some decency and tranquility.
