LETTER: Sensible gun legislation needed

I am a lifetime Democrat who has voted in every election since 1956. The only Republican I voted for was Charles Mathias in Maryland. This year I am voting for Pat Toomey, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

He had the moral integrity to co-sponsor gun-safety legislation with Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.). I am not supportive of the economic position of Mr. Toomey. I doubt if I would agree with 80 percent of his legislation. But we need leaders who will make the tough decisions regarding human life in all its forms. I would urge everyone to ask the Senator to continue to pursue sensible gun legislation.

All guns should be registered, insured and maintained in a secure manner. Lost or stolen weapons should be reported. Battlefield weapons should be illegal.

We have wounded the soul of this nation through the callous disregard of the life and liberty of our citizenry. I am not questioning the Second Amendment. I object to the abuse of its intent.
