Today is Flag Day. For many — even veterans — it will go largely unnoticed, especially falling mid-week this year. As a veteran, it’s always been special for me and I do take time to pause and reflect on its meaning. If needed, I replace the flag I fly at my home with a new one to stand out. Old flags are disposed of properly by turning them over to veterans’ clubs.

In 1967, I was part of a “living flag” ceremony in Soldier’s Field, Chicago, a 50-year anniversary celebration of a 1917 similar event. As a Navy boot camp recruit, I didn’t have much of a choice to participate as 10,000 of us were marched onto the field and stood in designated spots to form the stars and stripes and a blue field. It even included a white ‘flag pole’ of four-men deep. I was in the ninth star.

So, while I don’t have the time and resources to pull this off, is there anyone in York County that would consider creating such a tribute in 2017? It might be impractical to expect 10,000 volunteers, but could York muster 1,000, 2,000 willing participants?

Mark your calendars, Wednesday, June 14, 2017.
