LETTER: 21st century education: 'Downfall of America'
I am responding to the open letter to state Sen. Scott Wagner, who was blamed for politics invading the classroom and deteriorating quality education. Unfortunately, it is the result of mandates from the federal government. The computer diagnostic assessments, which control classroom instruction, are being used to measure teacher effectiveness by collecting student data. The purpose of these tests is to align curriculum to the Standards Alligned System.
Encouraging children to discover and make learning fun and meaningful is of the past. This is the result of education moving into the 21st century under Common Core Standards promoted by Secretary Arne Duncan in his 2010 education reform speech before the United Nationas in Paris. The speech states the following: "The first assurance was that states would work toward developing academic standards ... the second assurance governors provided was in the area of data systems and assessments to assist teachers and principals to improve instruction ... the third assurance asked states to commit to improving preparation and evaluation of teachers and school leaders. The data will create a strong cradle-to-career continuum."
This is a national education system to transform academics to promote environmentalism, multiculturalism, humanism and socialism. This 21st century education will be the downfall of America. School choice is the solution. School funding should follow children to the school that parents choose.
