Trump's inauguration draws Yorkers for 'pivotal' moment

• Chairman of the county Republican Committee and a former delegate will be in D.C. for Trump's inauguration.
• The two look forward to attending and for Trump's presidency.

Some Yorkers are making the trek to Washington, D.C., next week to see President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, and one of them expects it will usher in "the most pivotal presidency in modern history."

Alex Shorb, chairman of the York County Republican Committee, and Matthew Jansen, a Spring Grove school board member and a delegate to last summer's Republican National Convention, will  be attending the Jan. 20 event.

Shorb will be heading down alone. Although he said he would love to go with a group of locals, he's still working out travel plans and searching for others who are going.

Shorb said he decided to go because of the historic nature of the election. "I just like to see those aspects of democracy take place," he added.

Jansen was originally unsure if he would attend the inauguration. It's expensive to try to stay in D.C. during such a busy weekend, and the security could be a hassle, he said.

He committed to attending after he learned a friend from San Diego, whom he met during the GOP convention, was making the trip.

"I'm two hours from Washington, D.C., so there's really no reason for me not to go," Jansen said. He also will  be attending the parade that will take place after the inauguration and the inaugural ball.

Shorb and Jansen both said they were excited to see the inauguration and about what Trump's presidency could bring. Jansen said the inauguration would be "one for the history books," and that those in attendance will get a lot out of the event.

Despite criticism of Trump for his actions toward women and his tendency to lash out on Twitter, Shorb favors his blunt personality.

"Quite frankly I like everything about him," Shorb said. "I think it starts with the no-nonsense way he speaks."

Shorb did admit he is curious to see how Trump transitions from working in business to working in politics, two very different arenas. While he doesn't want Trump to change, he does hope to see him grow into the role of president.

The only thing Jansen said he's concerned about is the possibility Trump won't be able to accomplish everything he promised while campaigning.

Jansen said it's most important to him that Trump immediately tackle immigration reform and putting up a wall between Mexico and the U.S.

Otherwise, he said, he's excited about the president-elect's Cabinet picks and believes Trump's presidency will be a time of reconstruction for the country.

"I think Trump's presidency will be the most pivotal presidency in modern history," he said.

Trump's inaugural swearing-in ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the Capitol steps, after which the inaugural parade will take place.
