The Democratic Party of York County will maintain its lone seat in the state General Assembly, as Carol Hill-Evans has won the race in the 95th District.

Hill-Evans said it feels "awesome, like all the hard work has paid off."

The York City Council president ran a shortened campaign against GOP candidate Joel Sears after taking over for incumbent Rep. Kevin Schreiber, D-York City, in mid-August.

Hill-Evans said she was proud her campaign was able to mobilize quickly, stick to the issues and meet face-to-face with many residents.

Schreiber announced he would pull his name from the ballot to take over as president and CEO of the York County Economic Alliance, and the Democratic Party of York County picked Hill-Evans as his replacement after a field of six spoke at a public forum.

Schreiber attended the York Dems party at Roosevelt Tavern on Tuesday night and said he was a little sentimental but excited to get started at his new position.

He said he believes Hill-Evans will do an excellent job.

Sears, of Spring Garden Township, is the president of a software design and consulting firm and previously served on the board of school directors at York Suburban.

From the beginning of his campaign, Sears spoke of his desire to eliminate school property taxes and replace that funding with an increase in sales and income taxes.

Hill-Evans has said she would be in favor of more incremental reforms to school property taxes because she worries an outright elimination could negatively affect school funding.

Sears congratulated Hill-Evans but lamented that he believes the 95th District needs Republican representation.

"(Democratic) policies don't work," he said at the York County Republican Committee party. "People in the city are hurting."

The 95th District, which encompasses all or parts of York City, West York, West Manchester Township and Spring Garden Township, has been represented by a Democrat since 1985, when Michael Bortner took over for Republican Stanford Lehr.

Hill-Evans is the first woman to represent the district.
